History: This Cemetery was established prior to 1850 at which time it was
a Church Cemetery. It was purchased in 1850 by the City of Atlanta and
has been city maintained since. The cemetery contains an estimated 88 acres. Confederate
Section of the Cemetery contains an estimated 15,000 burials. The entire cemetery is
estimated to contain around 44,000 burials as of 1995. Many Confederates are buried in
private lots, most not marked as Confederate Veterans. Historic Oakland cemeteryis final
resting place of five Confederate Generals and was the temporary resting place of Vice
President of the Confederacy, Alexander Hamilton Stephens. It too is the resting place of
Georgia's War Governor, Joseph E. Brown as well as many prominent figures in Georgia's
history. The magnificent Confederate Obelisk located in the cemetery stands 65 feet tall
and was, at that time, the tallest Structure in Atlanta when it was dedicated April 26,
1874. Equally impressive is the Confederate Lion of Atlanta, an impressive monument
to the "Unknown Confederate Dead." The life-size lion, modeled after the Lion of
Lucerne in Europe is carved from marble supplied by the Georgia Marble company. At the
time the 30,000 block of marble used for the carving was the largest block of marble
ever quarried. Historic Oakland Cemetery has been a popular and welcome place for visitors
for nearly 150 years.
